Day 1 in Jackson

10:00am- Experience Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum!

Visit the Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Museum that represents a small “Mississippi town”. The museum features the past and present of the agricultural lifestyle and practices in Mississippi through exhibits and artifacts on display. Inside the museum, know about catfish farming and other agricultural farming practices, transportation modes like railroad and water exhibits, and several other artifacts. The museum has a train and carousel ride, too for the kids.  It also has a general store and a blacksmith’s shop on the site.

Next, head to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum that pays testament to the Mississippi athletes and athletic history. Watch the Mississippi great sports moments, or test your skills at the Participatory room that has golf, baseball and soccer activities. 2:00pm- Delve into Mississippi natural landscape at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science!

Visit the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science that features exhibits on the native natural flora and fauna, a replica swamp, dinosaur bones, raw minerals, geological exhibits, taxidermy animals display, gemstones, and other wildlife exhibits. It also an aquarium that has more than 200 living species, and about 2.5 miles of nature trails. The collection of the museum comprises of more than 870,000 specimens of Mississippi freshwater mussels and vertebrate animals. Stroll down the trail and take in the nature at its best!

3:00pm- Tour the Eudora Welty House!

Calling all literature lovers! The Eudora Welty House is a historic house of the Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Eudora Welty. She stayed here for over 75 years. The house features the original furnishings, art, books, photos, personal items and other memorabilia related to Welty. Outside the house is a stunning garden that features a woodland garden, a rose garden, perennial border, trellises and a camellia garden. Take a historic tour of the house and a peaceful stroll through the garden!

4:00pm- Glimpse of Times Long Past at The Oaks House Museum!

Next, head to the Oaks House Museum, another historic house listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house served as a residence of the longtime mayor of Jackson- James H. Boyd. It features a period furnishings and Boyd family items and memorabilia that illustrate their life in Jackson in the mid-nineteenth century. It also has a Victorian garden which includes antique roses, native perennials and a camellia garden. A trip back to the 1800s!

Visit the Mississippi State Capitol that typifies the Beaux-Art style architecture. It serves as a seat of the state government. The Capitol houses the State Library, the Legislative Chambers, the Governor’s Office, the Hall of Governors, the original Liberty Bell replica, the magnolia tree, the sculpture from the second USS Mississippi battleship and a statue in memory of the Confederate soldiers and their families. 11:00am- Admire the local art at Mississippi Museum of Art!

Head to the Mississippi Museum of Art that features an impressive collection of Mississippi art called as the “The Mississippi Story”.  The museum features art collection from the 1800s and the 1900s, as well as an impressive collection of contemporary art, African American folk art, Civil War drawings, paintings, photographs, works on paper and sculptures. It houses a permanent collection of works by the American artists, such as Andy Warhol, Arthur B, Davies, Thomas Sully, Robert Henri and Georgia O’Keefe. Visitors will find works by some of the well-known Mississippi artists on display, too, such as Walter Anderson, Gwendolyn A. Magee, William Dunlap and Birney Imes.

Visit the Jackson Zoo that houses more than 150 species and about 800 individual exotic animals and endangered species.  The Zoo includes African Savannah and African Rainforest, Jewels of South America and Froggy Bottom. The wildlife at the zoo includes African Elephant, Red Fronted Lemur, Sumatran Tiger, Orangutan, Macaque, Amur Leopard, Chimpanzee, Malayan Tapir and Spider Monkey, all housed in their natural habitats. 3:00pm- Learn about the Universe at Russell C. Davis Planetarium!

Next, visit the Russell C. Davis Planetarium where visitors can learn about space, sky, celestial navigation and astronomy. Visitors can travel through space, see the starry night sky, check out the stunning colorful laser light shows, and unravel the mysteries of the planets and stars at the McNair Space Theatre’s Sky Show.
