The city of Jackson has a rich and diverse history, and top-notch tourist spots that offers something for music lovers, art aficionados, history buffs, outdoorsy types, solo travelers and families. And not to forget, there are plenty of offerings for kids, too, but appealing to parents as well.  It is the city where history, music, outdoors, the art and the culture are all an allure. The Mississippi Museum of Art features local, national and international modern and contemporary art. It features a permanent collection of American art in a wide variety of media, including sculptures, works on paper, paintings, prints and photography from the antiquity to the present day. Visitors will find works by some of the well-known Mississippi artists on display like Walter Anderson, Gwendolyn A. Magee, William Dunlap and Birney Imes, and several other International artists, including George O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, James Abbott McNeil Whistler, and more. The focus, though, is more on the local and regional art.

A glimpse into the history of Mississippi at Mississippi Old State Capitol!

Originally known as the State House, the Mississippi Old State Capitol is Jackson’s landmark. From 1839 to 1903, it served as the capitol; from 1917-1959 as a state office building, and from 1961 to the present day as state’s historical museum. The Old State Capitol features an elaborate collection of artifacts that depict the history and diversity of Mississippi. It also has Native American period historical collections from the colonial era to the present day. From Civil War era to Civil Rights Movement to the modern day, there is plethora of stunning artifacts on display. The multimedia exhibits, Greek-style architecture and elaborate interiors accentuate the capitol’s beauty. The exterior is built of limestone, and it has a copper dome. Step back in time!

Tour the Mississippi State Capitol!

The Mississippi State Capitol is a stately structure listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The architecture is Beaux-Art style and the exterior is built of limestone and granite. Plus, there is an elaborate white and black marble rotunda, and a 8-foot tall and 15 foot wide gold-leaf covered eagle above the dome.   This structure houses the State Library, the Legislative Chambers, the Governor’s Office and the Hall of Governors. The capitol building ground features the original Liberty Bell replica, the magnolia tree, the sculpture from the second USS Mississippi battleship and a statue in memory of the Confederate soldiers and their families. Take a guided tour of the Capitol and get an up-close look inside the House of Representatives and Senate chambers during the legislative sessions. From the stupendous interior and exterior to its vast history, this place is an impressive building for people for all ages!

Tour the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion!

The Mississippi Governor’s Mansion is the second oldest governor’s residence of its kind in the U.S. Designed in the Greek-Revival architectural style, this stately structure reflects the historic past of Mississippi. It was first acquired by Governor Tilghman Tucker in 1842, and later by the military governor to house the wounded soldiers. The mansion boasts a Gold Parlor, a Green Bedroom and a Dining Room. Check out the period furnishings and the beautiful interiors. Beautiful garden on its ground accentuate the beauty of this striking mansion.

Kids Edutainment Session at Mississippi Children's Museum!

The Mississippi Children’s Museum is a place where both the kids and the kids at wannabe rejoice! It features hands-on interactive exhibits on diverse subjects from science to art and history to health. Kids can express themselves at the cultural arts gallery; learn about the Mississippi geography and history through a Mississippi climbing map, kids can don different characters and explore the major careers possibilities in Mississippi through exhibits, learn about the human body through human skeletal structure, and also kids can take part in hands-on gardening demos to tumbling, yoga and other activities.  Climb, paint, slide, dance and play your way at this museum!

Learn about Mississippi Sports History at Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum!

The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum features just about everything on sports. The museum tells the stories of the sports legends of Mississippi through hands-on exhibits and memorabilia. Interactive kiosks are available all around the museum. Visitors can retrieve the past interviews, archival footage and other information on the sports. Dizzy Dean Museum, Viking Classic Exhibit, Wendy’s High School Gallery, and Singular Wireless Broadcast Experience, are among the few exhibits on display. Know the history of the PGA Golf Tournament of Mississippi, check out the locker room loaded with original jerseys, and visit the Participatory room where you can play a round of golf, kick a soccer ball or hit a baseball. Old-time stars as well as modern era athletes, all are featured here. This spot has been included in the “Top 10 Amazing Baseball Museums in the U.S.” by ESPN. A must-visit spot for any sports lover fan!

Discover the natural history of Mississippi at Mississippi Museum of Natural Science!

Located in LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is an indoor and outdoor museum that offers a wealth of information on the natural history of the state through interesting permanent and travelling exhibits. It includes many life-size exhibits of diverse habitats of Mississippi, including fossils, plants and animals; a greenhouse called as “The Swamp”, and an aquarium that has more than 200 living species. Get an up-close look of the live aquatic creatures in the saltwater touch tank. Outside the museum is a natural landscape of 300-acres, an open-air amphitheatre and about 2.5 miles of natural trails. The collection of the museum comprises of more than 870,000 specimens of Mississippi freshwater mussels and vertebrate animals. Souvenir items and gifts are also available at the gift shop on the premises. Best of all, there is something for all ages here!

See the animals in their natural surroundings at Jackson Zoo!

Jackson Zoo features more than 150 species and about 800 individual exotic animals and endangered species.  A range of wildlife from animals to birds and reptiles, and from different places from African Savannah and African Rainforest to Jewels of South America to Froggy Bottom, are featured. Wildlife includes African Elephant, Red Fronted Lemur, Sumatran Tiger, Orangutan, Macaque, Amur Leopard, Chimpanzee, Malayan Tapir and Spider Monkey, all housed in their natural habitats. You’ll also find a Wilderness that includes rattlesnakes, mountain lions and black bears, and a Tiger Exhibit. Ride the historic train and take a tour of the zoo. The Jackson Zoo will enchant the children as well as their parents!

Experience the outer world at Russell C. Davis Planetarium!

The Russell C. Davis Planetarium is a stunning hemisphere theatre located in the Downtown Cultural Arts District of Jackson. It is the place where visitors can experience the universe, see the starry night sky, check out the stunning colorful laser light shows, and unravel the mysteries of the planets and stars at the McNair Space Theatre’s Sky Show. Also, it has large-format films that feature the natural science documentaries. In addition, the planetarium hosts several educational programs on travel, physical science, arts and astronomy.  So, get ready to be transported to the outer world and explore the solar system!

Take a Tour of The Oaks House Museum!

The Oaks House Museum is a Greek Revival-style house that survived the burning of the city during the Civil War. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was residence of James H. Boyd, longtime mayor of Jackson. It features a period furnishings and Boyd family items and memorabilia that illustrate their life in Jackson in the mid-nineteenth century, mainly from 1853 until 1863. Outside the cottage is a Victorian garden which has antique roses, native perennials, camellia garden, a kitchen herb garden and a barn. Several events are held at this spot.

Walk through the historic Eudora Welty House!

The Eudora Welty House features the life and legacy of the Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist Eudora Welty who lived here for about 76 years. The house has original furnishings, art, books written by her, personal belongings and memorabilia strewn around the house. It is one of the beautiful and top-notch literary house museums in the nation. Outside the house is a stunning garden that features a woodland garden, a rose garden, perennial border, trellises and a camellia garden. It is not only known for its historic significant, but also for its magnificent natural beauty. Worth a visit!

The Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Museum features the forestry and agriculture heritage and history of Mississippi. The museum spans over 40 acres of land and consists of a 1920s Small Town Mississippi, the National Agricultural Aviation Museum, the Ag Museum’s Heritage exhibit center, a farmstead 150 years old, and several local historical artifacts.  Experience the rural life and culture.
